February 7 - From Hip-Hop to Michelle Obama to The Help
Join award-winning novelist and essayist Marita Golden as she moderates a panel discussion about historical and contemporary Black female cultural and media images and mythology and their impact on African American women, the African American community and global perceptions of Black women.
Ms. Golden will be joined for this discussion by:
-Abdul Ali, a culture critic, poet and essayist.
-Natalie Hopkinson, former contributing editor of The Root magazine and journalism professor at Georgetown University. She is the author, with Natalie Y. Moore, of "Deconstructing Tyrone: A New Look at Black Male Masculinity in the Hip-Hop Generation."
Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 6:30pm. Location - Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001. This lecture will take place in the Great Hall.

Marita will lead The Art of Memoir Writing Workshop. In this workshop we will explore how to overcome the impulse to censor the most compelling aspects of our personal experience in memoir writing, and how to navigate the competing demands for honesty while respecting the privacy of family and friends. The questions raised by writing stories based on our life are often challenging and can derail the writing process. This class gets you back on track.
